Registered Gregg County ARES Participants…
As mentioned on our recent training net, we are scheduling our local ARRL EC-001, Intro to EmComm Course. This course focuses primarily on the communications aspects of emergencies and is required for all Gregg County ARES participants, per the participants guide. The course will be taught over 8 weeks, with a contingency for a ninth week.
Assuming that most, if not all, currently registered ARES participants have not taken this course and will want to attend to meet the participation requirements, we are limiting this initial class offering to just registered Gregg County ARES participants. This will keep our class size to a manageable number for this initial offering.
Course Dates: Every Tuesday evening at 7PM, starting February 21st and ending April 10th.
Location: Longview Red Cross
Instructors: Gary Lewis – WG5L, Terry Johnson – KG5WO
Course Cost: $30 (to cover cost of course text and course incidentals) – the online version on the ARRL site costs $50 without the text.
Exam Date: April 21, 2012 at the regular LETARC VE session
Prerequisites
FEMA online courses IS-100 and IS-700 are mandatory. Courses IS-200 and IS-800 are strongly recommended.
You will be required to bring copies of your FEMA certificates or transcript.
Course Attendance
We strongly advise you to make every effort to attend all sessions. However, we realize that eight weeks is a big commitment and you may have to miss a week because of other commitments. If you miss a week of the course, you will be required to catch-up on the assigned readings and activities on your own.
We need to have a count of how many will be taking the course, so we know how many course texts to order.
Please reply to this e-mail by Friday, January 20th if you will be participating.
Thanks for being a part of Gregg County ARES and all you do!
Update:
Just a comment on the prerequisite FEMA courses: There are only two that are required (IS-100 and IS-700). These only take a few hours to complete and to take the exam. I completed them in two evenings, including the exams.
Online FEMA courses can be found at: FEMA Independent Study Programs
Again, we need to know whether you will participating by this Friday, January 20th. We will need to collect the course fees by the following Friday, January 27th or you can bring them to the monthly LETARC club meeting, this Saturday, January 21st… so we can order the books.
